I could learn guitar (again) (sort of)

I have a Martin Backpacker. (It's no longer listed on the Martin site at all, not even under retired models.)

I got it for convention filksings, because it takes less space than a normal guitar. I'm aware the sound is considered not-great. (However, some of the complaints - "[only] great for folk, bluegrass and the like" - are not detriments for me.)

I've taken beginner guitar lessons several times. I can (very slowly) read music; I can (very slowly) hit a few chords (or, I could a decade ago, and would presumably reach my previous skill level pretty quickly). I never got as far as "play a song fast enough to sing along with it." But! I now would not be embarrassed to have other people overhearing me practice! I could learn again!

Giles: Of course! Well, it makes sense now.
Buffy: Yeah, it's all falling into place. Of course that place is nowhere near this place.

What I read

Finished The Verifiers, which did pick up momentum, maybe I might try the next one? but not immediately.

The latest Literary Review.

Candice Carty-Williams, Queenie Is Working On It (2026) - okay, I was actually expecting this to go somewhere it didn't (that fertility clinic being a sleazy operation which terrifies women with *DECLINING FERTILITY* to upsell them on treatments, IVF, etc etc) which was probably genre misreading? (so much genre mixing it up these days....) but I didn't like it as much as Queenie. Thought it leant on some motifs that were rather stock conventions.

Had been thinking about for some time for some reason, and managed to find on my shelves (WIN), my aged Ace Double copy of Suzette Haden Elgin's The Communipaths (1970). Gosh, it's rather plonky. And Sooooo 1970 with the Maklunites who are idealised hippy commune In Spaaace.

Definitely having 'probably not them, it's me' feeling about current reading there.

On the go

However, I have plucked off the shelf Pamela Dean, Juniper, Gentian and Rosemary (1998), which I have not read in since forever, and it's absolutely hitting the spot.

Up next

Absolutely no idea. Oh, maybe The Dubious Hills???

Chuffed as I am (natch) at this intelligence:

Reading for pleasure has benefits at all ages – from improving health and wellbeing to staving off dementia – say scientists

- and the effects are not dependent upon its being Grate Litrachur -

I do wonder whether someone will desperately try to incorporate Fun Reading into the Self-Improvement Grind, sigh?

Though the whole 'pleasure' angle is slantwise to that message.

Do we suppose that all those guys who were 'raw-dogging' plane flights to prove how hard they were will now be reading instead, because It's Good For Them? (this can only be a good thing, really).

Though I am immensely heartened at something that gives pleasure is accorded the accolade of Being Good for Health and Wellbeing -

- yet I daresay yer MachoMaxxers will have nothing to do with it, pleasure is for the weak (better mental health and empathy, pah!).

I'll be over here with my nose in a book.

CD alarm clock died again

I have a CD/radio/buzzer alarm clock. The CD part has died. (Not the first time; it died before, and after a few weeks/couple of months, started working again.)

It's... old. At least 15 years, maybe 20 or more.

I bought a replacement at Amazon and it didn't work (and I was well past the return time by the time I tested it). The CD player just flat-out didn't play. I'm currently coping with an hour of radio time instead of my wake-up CD. Not happy about that; morning music radio is rare, and the reception in my room isn't great. My options are limited. KOIT 96.5 is tolerable, but last time this happened, I got bored with their music in a few days. (Which is surprising, since my wakeup CD is exactly the same songs, every morning - but I chose those. I like waking up to "Good Morning, Starshine" every morning.)

1) Recommendations for a CD-playing alarm clock are very welcome.
2) Recommendations for a way to play 1 hr (ish) of my choice of music as an alarm also welcome. Finding an app that will do this may not be viable; I tend to keep my phone on silent except for alarms & phone calls. (Because too many games have annoying music that won't turn off.)

Not happy with the enshittification principle )
